Overview of projects (species / countries)

Much of the work of LHF has to do with field projects in the wider range of large herbivore conservation and restoration, including their ecosystems.

However LHF is not a project organization.

LHF is aiming to bring people, parties and institutions together, to cooperate in the field of large herbivore conservation. The project approach is often the logical vehicle to arrange for cooperation, co-funding and synergy to include all aspects of conservation, not forgetting about the ‘Human Dimensions’. LHF uses a seed money strategy, using small moneys to facilitate cooperation and the initiation of projects. Once things have been set in motion and a solid base for a successful cooperation for field projects is created, LHF will facilitate in seeking active support from third parties. This may be co funding, structural support, etc. from WWF , other NGO networks and from GO’s , International Conventions and International bodies like, EU, GEF and UN agencies.

Since 1998, LHF has initiated, started or supported over 40 projects all over the geographical range of LHF, in cooperation with a large number of partners. A number of these LHF initiated projects have been ‘handed’ over successfully for structural continuation. Examples include; Mongolian gazelle (MN)> UNEP, Mongolian saiga > MAVA foundation/WWF MN, Bukhara deer > WWF/ Uzbek government, Saiga (RU/CA)> many international NGO/GO parties, incl. Bonn convention + CITES, European bison> broadening cooperation NGO/GO, Bern convention, EU.
