LHF made a presentation on the status and implementation of the IUCN/ LHF 'Species Action Plan for European Bison', to the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention/ COE in Strasbourg. LHF is considered by the COE and Bern Convention parties, to be the monitoring agency for the SAP on bison. In side meetings, the implementation activities by bison range states was discussed.
At an expert symposium at Utrecht University NL / Law Faculty, Willemijn Oudenaarden (LHF judicial advisor) presented the outcome of her - LHF commissioned- study into the EU regulations on animal/ large herbivore transport, re-introductions and release. According to the studies, the EU veterinary and nature regulations, do not comply; regulations for ‘wild’ (or de-domesticated) herbivores often do not exist; regulations for domestic herbivores are prevailing and contrary to the needs for wild herbivores. The study has started a discussion amongst law experts, to see how nature issues on large herbivores/ re-introduction, transport, etc. can be covered and improved in regulations. A summary of the studies will be published in European law expert journals. (See also LHF e-Browser spring 2008)
