Human Dimensions of Wildlife Management (HDWM) is a field of study which involves listening to, gathering, understanding and explaining the beliefs, concerns, and opinions of interest groups and members of the public who are affected by wildlife management efforts. HDWM researchers and practitioners also work with nature and wildlife conservationists and managers to help integrate human dimensions information into effective and acceptable management strategies.
Human Dimensions information is essential for wildlife managers and nature conservationists because failing to understand the positions and address the concerns of the public and interest groups can result in unsupported decisions, which may contribute to public opposition to nature and wildlife conservation efforts. With accurate information about beliefs and attitudes, however, managers and interest groups who are willing can more effectively work toward building consensus on a decision, preparing more effective and acceptable management plans, or even developing targeted information programs that can affect human thought and action.
