Working schemes

Our approach

Strategic lines

LHF will work via two strategic lines, in close cooperation with its network of experts and in a network of partnerships:

Top-down via policy development, law enforcement and public awareness on large herbivores in Eurasia;

Bottom-up approach on ecosystems and species through the development of well connected, climate proof living landscapes, with plenty of room for the species. Large herbivores are prey for the large carnivores and a steering factor in the ecosystems.

To enlarge, please click on the schemes.

How to become a special contact for ECNC-LHF?

If you would like to become a special contact for ECNC-LHF(expert, country contact, volunteer or ambassador), please don't hesitate to seek contact.

Networking is the key for cooperation and success

LHF was always focussed on its network as a real network organisation and will also be a network organisation in future, under the umbrella of ECNC. New in this figure is the difference between the experts and the to develop country contacts. LHF needs good representations in the different countries. That could be WWF-offices, but also other organisations that are active with good contacts in the various countries. Also new are the volunteers; hands-on volunteers and ambassadors. The ambassadors have good contacts with the so-called High Network Potentials, people that can make the difference in the activation of our network on higher levels.

How to support the Large Herbivores Eurasian Support Network?

The Large Herbivores Eurasian Support Network is a network organisation that can't survive with the support of you and many others.

We distinguish the following interest groups: experts (professional practitioners caring for Eurasian large herbivores in their vast landscapes), ambassadors and country contacts.
Together they form an effective and influence rich network of expertise and experiences, that will make a necessary contribution to the conservation and the rehabilitation of large herbivores in their ecosystems and vast landscapes

What could you mean for the LARGE HERBIVORES?

We really would like to develop a group of interested supporters. Therefore - if you would like to help - we are interested in to know about your skills, not only in ecological aspect (animals, landscapes), but also - even more important - in social, organisational, communicative and economical / financial / fundraising sense.

But - of course and at least as important - you could also support the Large Herbivores Eurasian Support Network in a financial way.

Until now we don't not have a membership facility, but donations are most welcome. Larger donations, above euro 1000 per year, will - if appreciated - published on this website.

Small donations can be done through PayPal payments, if you have the intention to donate a larger amount, please contact us to avoid transaction fees.

Mission, vision and approach

From the Large Herbivore initiative, via the Large Herbivore Foundation to the Large Herbivores Eurasian Support Network

Eurasia once was the home of billions of grazing mammals; the large herbivores. Forests, wetlands, grasslands, mountains, tundra, steppes and deserts were inhabited by a wide variety of hoofed animals. Certain species used to migrate by the millions over thousands of kilometres as part of their natural behaviour. However, development of human societies has in particular during the last century, led to dramatic declines of numbers and ranges of most large herbivore species. The Large Herbivore Foundation was founded to counter these ever increasing threats and to aim for conservation and ecological restoration.

Kulan

Mission

Conserving and Restoring the essential role of large herbivores in nature

Dedicated to 'Forgotten Wildlife' in Eurasia

Building partnerships for conservation

Vision

'An Eurasian Continent, where people enjoy the benefits from ecosystems and landscapes, inhabited and shaped by viable populations of all large herbivores of the region, living in the wild'.

Geographical focus

Palaearctic Bio-geographical region; Europe, Mediterranean, Sahara/Sahel, Turkey, Arabian peninsula, Russia/ Siberia, Central Asia, Mongolia and China

In the East; focus on conservation of 'Forgotten large herbivore species' and their habitats. In the West ; focus on restoration of species and habitats/ ecological restoration.

See this map in somewhat improved form in Google Maps

Objectives

To conserve and restore ecosystems and landscapes as habitats and ecological substrates for large herbivores

To conserve and restore all wild large herbivore species in viable and natural spread populations

To also use domestic substitutes of extinct large herbivore species, to restore the ecological functions of large herbivores in landscapes. De-domestication and re- wilding of these grazers will be part of this process

To increase knowledge and appreciation of large herbivores by people.

Philosophy and Targets

To build and coordinate a (volunteer) network organization, with the aim:

To exchange knowledge and experienceTo have an actual insight in status and threats of large herbivores and their habitats/ ecosystems

To bring relevant parties together and facilitate cooperation.

To use a seed money strategy to initiate and/or support projects in the field.

To initiate and support policy and advocacy work, to advance the large herbivore conservation and restoration work.

To communicate this work, with the aim to strengthen the conservation work, to high light the profile and work of the LHF foundation and to find (partner) support and financial recourses by donors and sponsors.

New approach

LHF will work via two strategic lines, in close cooperation with its network of experts and in a network of partnerships:

Top-down via policy development, law enforcement and public awareness on large herbivores in Eurasia;

Bottom-up approach on ecosystems and species through the development of well connected, climate proof living landscapes, with plenty of room for the species. Large herbivores are prey for the large carnivores and a steering factor in the ecosystems.
